Medication Coverage on the Spring Trip to Washington DC

by | Mar 12, 2024 | Marching Band, Special Events

Good morning,
Please read carefully for information concerning medication coverage on the spring trip to Washington, DC.
If a student needs medicine and is traveling without a parent – There are two forms attached that must be completed to allow medicine to be brought and administered on the trip. These forms must be filled out correctly and accurately.
Prescription medications – The PPA form attached will authorize the distribution of any medicine, including prescriptions. The prescribing doctor’s signature must be obtained to validate the form for a prescription. This is one reason I am sending these out in advance, as sometimes it is not timely to get a doctor’s signature. Please read the Overnight Trip attachment for more information.
Over the counter medications – Any over the counter medications that a student regularly takes will need a PPA form. Please read the Overnight Trip attachment for more information.
If a student needs medicine and is traveling with their parent – No forms need to be filled out. The student’s parent will administer their medicine and only their medicine. These adults may not hold and/or distribute medicine for another student that is not their child.
Forms and medicine due dates – All forms are due by March 22. The medicine that goes with those forms is due by April 5. For prescriptions, please note that the Overnight Trip attachment says to only send the amount of medicine needed and no more. If a child takes a morning medicine, for example, then they would take it before we leave on April 10, and then send four doses of that medicine that would be administered the other mornings of the trip.
Who administers the medicine? – We have several teachers traveling on the trip who are Medication Assistants. We will divide the students among these teachers and the students will know to look for that particular teacher for medicine needs.
Spring Trip meeting – Please be reminded of our informational meeting next Tuesday, March 19 at 6:00pm in the CHHS auditorium. We will cover these medicine procedures in more detail, and Nurse Fields will be on hand to help answer any questions. Much, much more information will also be covered.
Contact Nurse Fields with questions – We have a wonderful school nurse at CHHS. You may contact Nurse Fields at afields@shelbyed.org or through phone at 205-682-7201. She is happy to answer questions so that we can avoid problems as we get closer to the trip.
THANK YOU for reading this information!
